What the accelerator actually does

An unsaturated polyester resin will not cure usefully at workshop temperature on catalyst alone. The accelerator — here a cobalt soap dissolved in a carrier — allows the catalyst to break down and begin crosslinking at ambient conditions rather than requiring heat. In practice the fabricator is buying room-temperature workability.

This is why a cobalt accelerator is only ever half of a pair. It has no useful hardening effect by itself, and adding more of it does not substitute for the catalyst. Some resins arrive pre-accelerated by the manufacturer, in which case additional cobalt may be unnecessary or actively unhelpful. Confirming whether the resin in use is pre-accelerated is the first question, not an afterthought.

The separation rule

Accelerator and peroxide catalyst are added to the resin separately, never combined with each other first. Bringing the two into direct contact in concentrated form is a recognised hazard, and the practice is avoided as a matter of routine across the industry regardless of brand or grade.

The working sequence is straightforward: disperse the accelerator into the resin and mix thoroughly, then add the catalyst and mix again. This is general good practice, not a dosage instruction — quantities, sequence and any exception belong to the current supplier documentation and to your own approved workshop procedure.

What moves gel time in real workshops

Gel time is rarely stable across a working year. Ambient temperature dominates: the same mix that behaves predictably in warm conditions will slow noticeably on a cold morning. Resin that has been stored somewhere cold behaves as cold resin even in a warm room, so material temperature and air temperature are separate variables.

Mix mass matters too. A larger volume retains its own reaction heat and accelerates itself, which is why a bucket can behave very differently from a small test cup of the identical mix. Humidity, substrate temperature and mould temperature all contribute at the margins.

The practical consequence for buyers: test on the actual job conditions rather than assuming a figure from another site or season carries across.

What to confirm before ordering

Useful enquiries state the resin system in use and whether it is already accelerated, the process (hand lay-up, spray-up, casting, moulding), the working conditions, and any documentation your own quality process requires.

On the product itself, the points worth pinning down are cobalt content, the carrier it is supplied in, pack format and the form you will actually handle. These are grade-specific and must come from the current supplier document rather than from a general guide such as this one.
